You’ve probably heard about the Chinese satellite Micius, which launched in 2016. It is the world’s first quantum-enabled satellite to establish space quantum communications. But what is this satellite quantum communication?

In layperson’s terms, satellite quantum communication is the communication established between ground stations and satellites or between the satellites themselves. It offers a global reach for distant locations. Unlike the traditional fiber optics cables, where photons are prone to noise and get destroyed over a few thousand kilometers, the photons in the air or free space may travel considerably farther, covering much more ground.

Secure quantum communication protocols facilitate communication between ground stations and satellites. Quantum communication protocols are impeccable for use in the space environment because of their distinctive characteristics and without relying on the vulnerable classical channels for communication. They exploit the notion of entangled photon pairs, no-cloning theorem, etc., enabling swift and secure data transmission over vast distances.

An interconnected network of satellites and ground stations could enable a global quantum network and, eventually, satellite networks. These satellite networks can be extended beyond the Earth’s orbit, enabling quantum communication with the Moon, Mars, or other celestial bodies. This interplanetary quantum communication will pave the way for instantaneous communication between the Earth and spacecraft exploring other planets, aiding real-time data and instructions transfer.

Space is anticipated to assume a crucial position in quantum communications, similar to its current relevance in navigation, communication, and sensor technology. The integration of quantum communication protocols into space-based systems holds immense promise.
